ABOUT ROGER'S HOUSE

Amy and Andrew Beaton were like any other expecting parents preparing for the arrival of their child, but in October 2012, tests revealed that their baby had a rare chromosomal abnormality called Pallister-Killian Syndrome and that chance of survival was extremely low.  Anyone would feel lost faced with such a situation, but once transferred to Roger’s House, their team of doctors and nurses were able to guide them through the difficult road that lay ahead.  “They would have moved mountains to help us” said Amy Beaton as she recalled her experience with the team.

Roger's House provided the couple with the tools necessary in handling a very delicate situation, from what to expect and how Dylan's birth would be handled right through to any bereavement assistance they might require. Because his chances of surviving much longer after birth were very low, staff were prepared to take pictures, hand and foot prints and anything else the couple requested immediately following delivery.

Dylan Andrew Beaton was born on November 29th, 2012 and with the help and support of Roger’s House, the family began making memories together.  During Dylan’s short life, staff was in frequent contact with the family and when Dylan passed away on January 5th, 2013 at the Roger’s House campus, his parents were able to be by his side and said goodbye in a peaceful, compassionate environment.  “They treated us like we were family.”  Says Andrew Beaton of Roger’s House.  “We just want to thank them for all they have done for us and for so many others.”

Roger's House continues to be a large part of the Beaton family's life as well as for so many other families.

Roger’s House is located on the CHEO campus in Ottawa, Ontario.  A home away from home for families facing life-limiting illnesses such as PKS,  services include:

Respite care, end of life, transition to home, pain and support management, peri-natal and bereavement care.

The impact Roger’s House has on families is extraordinary.  It provides them with the opportunity to spend private quality time with their loved ones, and to say goodbye in a compassionate home-like atmosphere.
